The Cuba Project, writers of books about the Cuban Revolution, held a discussion re-examining that tumultuous period and the people who helped shape it. After their presentation they answered audience members' questions.

Anthony DePalma is the author of The Man Who Invented Fidel: Castro, Cuba and Herbert L. Matthews of The New York Times, published by Public Affairs. He discussed the influence of The New York Times reporter Herbert Matthews, whose positive stories about Fidel Castro during the late 1950s shaped the way Americans viewed the revolution. In 1957, Herbert L. Matthews, one of the premier foreign correspondents of his time, tracked down Fidel Castro in Cuba’s Sierra Maesta mountains and returned with what was considered the scoop of the century. In his book Anthony DePalma, who had been a correspondent and reporter at The New York Times for almost twenty years, re-examined the Matthews case to reveal how is the story not just how Castro came to power but how Americ close
