The guest talked about the political, social, and historical significance of the construction and the dismantling of the Berlin Wall. She said that East Germany pressured the Soviet Union to build the wall, which was designed to keep people from fleeing communist East Germany to democratic West Germany. Construction began August 13, 1961, and the wall was torn down starting November 9, 1989. Ms. Harrison responded to audience telephone calls, faxes, and electronic mail. Pictures and video clips related to the Berlin Wall were also shown.
