Former Vice President Al Gore talked about his new book The Assault on Reason: How the Politics of Fear, Secrecy, and Blind Faith Subvert Wise Decision Making, Degrade Our Democracy, and Put Our Country and Our World in Peril, published by Penguin Press on that day. The book argues in favor of rational public debate, saying the Bush administration is part of a larger trend in which spin prevails over reason, making it impossible to make informed public policy decisions. He was interviewed by Harry Shearer on stage before an audience. Topics included the 2000 presidential election and Supreme Court decision, cable television, political and economic power structures, the environmental crisis, and the war in Iraq. close
