Elizabeth and Michael Norman talked about their book Tears in the Darkness: The Story of the Bataan Death March and Its Aftermath (Farrar, Straus and Giroux; June 9, 2009). In the book the husband and wife collaborators recount America’s first large scale land battle of World War II. The conflict which occurred on the Philippine peninsula, Bataan, from January to April of 1942 resulted in the surrender to the Japanese of 76,000 American and Filipino soldiers who endured a forty-one month imprisonment, which included hard labor and torture. They presented the story from American, Filipino, and Japanese points of view. The authors showed slides during their presentation and then responded to questions from members of the audience.

Michael Norman is the author of These Good Men: Friendships Forged from War. He is a former reporter for the New York Times and is currently a journalism professor at New York University.
