The subcommittee heard testimony from members of Congress, representatives of government agencies, and consumer organizations on legislation that would reform regulations requiring employers to pay Social Security taxes on domestic employees earning more than $50 per month, such as lawn maintenance and cleaning personnel. The issue became prominent after President Clinton’s first attorney general choice withdrew her name from the position after it was revealed she had not paid Social Security taxes for two illegal immigrants she had hired as domestic employees. close
