In the first panel, Mr. Apfel talked about the necessity of Social Security for the support of the elderly, disabled and others, but he explained that Social Security alone is not enough for Americans in the future. Ms. Rivlin spoke about economic growth, public savings and ways to fund Social Security. In the second panel, Dr. Summers said that increasing national savings and reducing debt are necessary to saving Social Security. He explained the strengths of President Clinton’s plan to preserve the budget surplus and use the surplus to save Social Security. The third panel talked about various ways to save Social Security, and why this is so important for working families and others. Each panel took questions from the audience. close
