Craig Symonds talked by remote video from New York City about the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. In his book, Neptune: The Allied Invasion of Europe and the D-Day Landings, Professor Symonds talks about the logistics and strategies behind Operation Neptune, the plan responsible for the naval aspects of the World War II invasion of Normandy, France. On June 6, 1944, 160,000 Allied troops attacked a 50-mile stretch of French coastline defended by German forces. He responded to telephone calls and electronic communications, including a telephone line reserved for World War II veterans. Video clips of the invasion and live scenes of the National World War II Memorial were shown in the background. close
