Former congressman and U.S. chief of Protocol James Symington talked about his family’s relationship with Lyndon B. Johnson and his work in the White House from 1967-68. For two years he handled diplomatic visits to Washington and established a “protocol” for heads of state. James Symington was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1969 and served Missouri’s 2nd congressional district until 1977. Symington’s father, Stuart, was a four-term Missouri senator and friend of Lyndon B. Johnson. James Symington also served as Attorney General Robert Kennedy’s Administrative Assistant from 1962-63. close
