Cases discussed: Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier seeks to determine if First Amendment freedom of the press rights extend to high school newspapers. Hazelwood is compared to the Tinker case. The Tinker case examined the right of students to wear black arm bands to school to protest the Vietnam war. The Court ruled that the students do not shed their First Amendment rights when they walk in the door of a school. Additional discussion topics: A gay activist protest on the steps of the Supreme Court which resulted in about 600 arrests; the role of the Solicitor General’s office in arguing cases before the Supreme Court; and new developments on Miranda warnings. close
