Stuart Rockoff, executive director of the Mississippi Humanities Council, talked about “Freedom Summer” and the movement to promote voter registration and civil rights in Mississippi in the 1960s. He explained why segregation was so intertwined in Mississippi’s culture and why civil rights efforts were so important in the state.

C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2014 LCV Cities Tour” in Jackson, Mississippi, from April 24-29 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Comcast Cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments aired on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments aired on BookTV on C-SPAN2. close
