A memorial was held for author and radio host Studs Terkel, who died on October 31, 2008, at the age of 96. He received the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction in 1985, and is best remembered for his oral histories of common Americans, and for hosting a long-running radio show in Chicago.

Many friends and colleagues spoke about the life and influence of Studs Terkel. The participants included Mr. Terkel’s son Dan Terkell, and his longtime friend and collaborator Sydney Lewis.

The event at The Great Hall at Cooper Union in New York City was sponsored by his longtime publisher, The New Press, and co-sponsored by The Nation magazine and The Indypendent, a newspaper of New York’s independent media. close
