President Bush signed H.R. 5140, the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, praising members of Congress for their quick, bipartisan efforts. The Act creates the mechanism for rebates of $600 for individuals and $1200 for couples for a total of $152 billion to help stimulate the economy. Democratic and Republican leaders of both houses of Congress stood behind the president.
