In his testimony, Chairman Greenspan said that the U.S. economy is favorable and that sustainable growth will probably continue with low inflation. He strongly supported the creation of a commission to set the size of the annual cost-of-living adjustments in Social Security, other federal benefits and income taxes. He said there is “almost a 100 percent probability that we are overcompensating the average Social Security recipient for increases in the cost of living.” close
