Sally Jenkins and John Stauffer talked about their book The State of Jones (Doubleday; June 23, 2009). The book recounts an insurrection against the Confederacy by residents of Jones County, Mississippi, from 1863 to 1865. The revolt was led by a local farmer, Newton Knight, and composed of his white and black neighbors. They talked about how they came to write the book, and the significance of the events they recounted. The authors responded to questions from members of the audience. Sally Jenkins is a journalist for the Washington Post. She is the author of numerous books, including The Real Americans and It's Not About the Bike that she co-wrote with Lance Armstrong. John Stauffer is the chair and a professor in the History of American Civilization department at Harvard University. Mr. Stauffer is the author of numerous books, including The Black Hearts of Men, which was the co-winner of the 2002 Frederick Douglas Prize and runner-up for the Lincoln Prize.
