President Obama announced that the U.S. would send up to 300 military advisers to “assist, advise, and support” Iraqi forces in response to violence in that country. He reiterated that American troops “would not be returning to combat in Iraq.” He also said the U.S. was increasing surveillance and intelligence efforts, and that Secretary of State John Kerry would travel to the region to lead a diplomatic effort. Following his statement, he answered several questions from reporters. close
