Ms. Tutwiler briefed reporters on recent events in the State Department. Specifically, she announced that the last Cuban troops will leave Angola on May 25, ending thirty years of Cuban military intervention in Africa. She also discussed Secretary of State James Baker’s recent trips to the Middle East. In recent hearings before the Senate Appropriations subcommittee on foreign operations, Secretary Baker criticized Israel for continuing to build settlements in the occupied zones and thus discouraging efforts to organize Arab-Israeli peace talks. Other issues brought up include conflict between Lebanon and Syria, and the continuing civil war in Ethiopia. close
