As part of a conference on President George W. Bush’s second term, experts discussed the White House staff and the cabinet. Professor Warshaw compared the new cabinet and sub-cabinet with previous versions, speculating about how the president’s choices reflect representation, policy-making, and presidential style. She described how the cabinet will serve the president and its interactions with the permanent bureaucracy. She is the author of, The Keys to Power: Managing the Presidency. Mr. Patterson talked about changes in the organization and staffing of the White House for 2005. He predicted that, while there will be some new people, the White House staff structure is a continuing inheritance of each newly inaugurated president. Patterson wrote a book, The White House Staff, and served various roles on the White House staff from 1969 to 1977.
