The Lincoln Forum symposium meets annually near the November 19th anniversary of the Gettysburg address to hear from authors and scholars on the 16th president. The 2005 meeting was devoted to studying the assassination of President Lincoln.

Book TV presented recorded lectures from the Lincoln Forum, and then gave viewers a chance to call in and ask questions. During the discussion between Mr. Williams and Mr. Steers, some archival photographs and video footage of various scenes associated with the assassination were shown.

On November 17, 2005, Edward Steers, Jr. discussed The Trial: The Assassination of President Lincoln and the Trial of the Conspirators, the 2004 book he edited of the transcript of the 1865 trial of the Lincoln conspirators. On November 18, 2005 a panel discussion moderated by Harold Holzer on “Why Was Lincoln Murdered?” was held with six Lincoln scholars: Frank Williams, Edward Steers, Jr., Michael Kauffman, James Swanson, Thomas Turner, and Louise Taper close
