The U.S. Conference of Mayors met to discuss the state of education in public schools and how to improve and ensure quality. They stressed the central importance of mayors to improve public schools. Chicago Mayor Richard Daley (D) said that everything else remained secondary in comparison to the quality of schools for retaining and attracting new residents. Representatives of President Bill Clinton’s administration and public school officials also talked about ways to improve American public education. close
