Members debated whether funding for NASA’s “Freedom” space station program should be deleted. The debate took place during consideration of the appropriations bill for Veterans' Affairs, Housing and Urban Development, and various independent agencies. An amendment was offered to cut $1.2 billion in funding for development of the space station. “Freedom” would be a manned orbiting laboratory which NASA hopes to begin building in orbit by 1996 and have functioning by the turn of the century. close
