Political turmoil in previous weeks had left thousands killed or displaced as rival ethnic and political factions attempted to control the country. The council voted to approve the secretary-general’s proposal to add 5,500 more peacekeeping troops in South Sudan. Following the vote, Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon spoke about some of the atrocities occurring in the region and said while peacekeeping troops, they would not be able to save everyone in danger. He said that the situation could not be resolved by military means as the solution was a political one. Then the Sudanese representative to the U.N. thanked the council.
