Assistant Secretary George Frampton and others briefed reporters on the continuing cleanup efforts in Prince William Sound, Alaska, following the Exxon Valdez oil spill. The legal settlement with Exxon was reached five years previously and provided a 900 million dollar trust fund to restore the area. Viewed as a daunting task, there were numerous challenges to whether the cleanup was possible since initially there was no plan. To date, significant progress had been made. Since 1993 a plan was drafted and implemented with close to half of the settlement being used by the time of the report. Lands around the sound were acquired to provide habitat preservation and restoration and a series of studies were made to monitor the long term effects of the spill. After his remarks, Sec. Frampton took questions from reporters. close
