Roger Cohen discussed his book, Soldiers and Slaves: American POWs Trapped by the Nazis' Final Gamble, published by Knopf. The book is about American soldiers in World War II who were captured during the Battle of the Bulge and were “classified” as Jewish by German captors, sent to a slave labor camp, and subjected to Nazi Holocaust atrocities. In February of 1945 they were transported to Berga concentration camp in eastern Germany because of their Jewish ancestry or because they appeared to be Jewish. This was the first time that American POWs were placed in a concentration camp as opposed to prisoner of war facilities. After his discussion, he responded to audience questions.
