The Washington Post hosted a meeting of the KidsPost Summer Book Club. KidsPost Editor John Kelly led a discussion of Jennifer Armstrong’s Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World, published by Random House. The book is about Ernest Shackleton’s attempt to lead the first expedition to cross Antarctica from one side to the other. When their ship, Endurance, became trapped in ice one hundred miles from land, the expedition’s men abandoned their goal and began fighting for their lives. For five months the twenty-eight men camped on ice floes. When spring came Shackleton and five others traversed eight hundred miles of open ocean in a twenty-foot boat to find a rescue ship. They succeeded and all of the expedition’s men survived. After the presentation, there was a short question-and-answer session. close
