House Commerce Committee members heard testimony from executives of the five largest tobacco companies in the U.S on the proposed settlement between States Attorneys General and the five tobacco companies. They testified about the addictiveness of nicotine, the responsibility of tobacco for public health problems, and alleged advertising targeted at children. They also stressed that limits on civil liability as proposed in the current settlement were crucial to any settlement which could be approved and supported by the industry.
