Committee members met to hear testimony from major tobacco executives on the tobacco industry perspective on the proposed settlement between states attorneys general and five tobacco companies. This portion contains the committee members' opening statements. In their statements, most members stressed the importance of congressional review of the settlement and the improvement of public health by reducing the number of smokers. Some members from tobacco-producing states were critical of government actions to regulate tobacco. close
