This is the first of four days of hearings on the Internal Revenue Service. Committee members reviewed operating procedures and practices of the criminal investigation unit of the IRS. Investigators testified that top executives at the IRS have routinely gone unpunished for fraud, abuse, and other serious misconduct and that higher-graded IRS officials operate under a different set of disciplinary standards than lower-graded employees. Ms. Darlene DesJardins testified as a “whistle-blower” and said she has suffered retaliation and has been undermined by the IRS in her efforts to obtain private sector employment. close
