Panelists talked about the qualities to be looked for in the next vice president and the political factors that might influence the selection of a running mate in 2008. Vice presidential selection is more important this year because of the age of the Republican nominee, the divisive fight for the Democratic nomination, and the expanded power of the office in recent years. Factors that speakers considered important in vice presidential selection included balancing the ticket and appealing to a defeated faction within the Republican Party. After their presentations the panelists responded to audience members' questions.
Former Governor Tommy Thompson participated by telephone.
