The Mansfield Center for Pacific Affairs sponsored a forum which brought together media representatives and academicians to discuss the media of the U.S. and Japan and their coverage of U.S.-Japanese relations. In this panel discussion, members of the political sphere who have been subjects of media coverage by U.S. or Japanese media, known as coverees, discussed how U.S. and Japanese media shape their public’s image of the opposite country’s political system. Issues brought up during the discussion include U.S. and Japan coverage of trade issues, the media as an actor in coverage of international relations, and the journalistic practices pursued by media in both countries. Members of the panel responded to questions on U.S. and Japanese media following the panel discussion. close
