The Cato Institute convened this panel of experts to discuss the context in which Social Security problems will be considered, and whether or not the Social Security system is in a crisis. Thomas Saving, who is on the Social Security Board of Trustees presented the trustees' view of the system’s solvency. Kent Smetters, Professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton Business School, argued that Social Security’s finances are worse than the trustees' projections. Mr. Tanner argues that solvency is not the only problem that Social Security faces, and Maya MacGuineas, Fiscal Programs Director at New America Foundation addressed the impact of Social Security finances on future generations and on younger Americans. After their presentations the panel members answered audience members' questions. close
