Acting Chair Martin Gruenberg and other Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation officials held a press briefing to announce the bank and thrift industry earnings for the second quarter of 2011. Mr. Gruenberg said the number of “problem” banks dropped the previous quarter for the first time since 2006, with positive earnings for eight consecutive quarters overall. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation also saod its fund for dealing with failing banks is in positive territory after seven negative quarters. close
