Louis Farrakhan delivered the Nation of Islam’s annual Saviours' Day speech, saying it was his farewell. He had ceded leadership duties of the Nation of Islam to an executive board the previous year due to illness. The topic of the speech was “One Nation Under God.” He called for international unity among religions and said, “If Jesus and Muhammad were on this stage, they would embrace each other with love.” Minister Farrakhan said the world is at war because Christians, Muslims and people of other faiths are divided. Tens of thousands of persons gathered in the stadium to hear the dramatic speech.

Although a controversial figure, Minister Farrakhan is probably best known for organizing the 1995 Million Man March in Washington, DC.

Saviours' Day is a celebration on February 26 of the birth of Nation of Islam founder Wallace Fard. The event took place at Detroit’s Ford Field. close
