The committee heard testimony on the afternoon of January 10 from Judge Griffin Bell, former attorney general during the Carter Administration, who found no evidence of impropriety in a transcript of a meeting in which Senator DeConcini was said to have pressured federal regulators to not investigate the financial dealings of Lincoln Savings and Loan. In fact, Judge Bell found no clear cut impropriety in the entire “Keating Five” hearings, saying the events that occurred were complicated and difficult to judge in terms of ethics. Senator DeConcini concluded testimony before the committee, marked with clashes between Mr. DeConcini and the lawyers for the Ethics Committee and the lawyer for Mr. McCain. Rosemary Stewart also concluded testimony.
