The Nation Institute and New School University presented a conversation on “The Deepening Shadow: The U.S. at War in the Nuclear Age” moderated by Chris Hedges. Among the subjects they addressed were the impact of the Cold War on current U.S. foreign policy, potential parallels between the Vietnam War and operations in Iraq, and their experiences in war zones. They also talk about a country’s ability to forget its involvement in conflict after losing a war as well as the dilemma faced by the United States as the sole superpower in the current global arena. Following their remarks they answered questions from members of the audience.

Jonathan Schell is the author of The Fate of the Earth and The Jonathan Schell Reader. Frances FitzGerald, author of Fire in the Lake and Way Out There in the Blue, is a winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Chris Hedges is the author of What Every Person Should Know About War and War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning. close
