Professor Zunes, who is currently working on a book about Western Sahara, spoke about U.S. policy in the region. Western Sahara has seen conflict among Morocco, Mauritania, Algeria and independence forces ever since Spain renounced claim to it in 1976. He argued that this conflict is a microcosm of the types of conflict endemic to the post-Cold War world as issues such as nationalism, the role of the U.N. and access to natural resources divide peoples and nations. After his prepared remarks, he took questions from the audience. close
