General Lessey talked about the growth of the selective service system during the fifty years of its existence. No one has been drafted since 1973. Due to the Persian Gulf war, the system is in its highest state of mobilization readiness. Currently, 90 percent of 18 to 26-year-old males are registered, and 99 percent of the 20 to 25 years which comprise the draft-eligible pool is registered. General Lessey explained the history of wartime drafts and current operations of the selective service. The American Legion supports the maintenance of the selective service system as a viable preparedness measure. close
