The Investigations subcommittee heard testimony on allegations of a cover-up in the 1988 interception and downing of an Iranian airbus by the USS Vincennes. Newsweek Magazine and ABC’s Nightline program had charged that the U.S. not only provoked the incident but also lied to cover it up. All 290 people aboard the airbus were killed in the downing on July 3, 1988.
