Secretary Leavitt announced plans for a transformation of the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps, one of the seven uniformed services, in order to increase the number of officers and strengthen its ability to deploy in public health emergencies. He described details of work done by Corps officers in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, “one of the great public health challenges of our time.” After the Reading of the Orders by Deputy Surgeon General Moritsugu, Dr. John Agwunobi was sworn in as Department of Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary for Health with the rank of admiral in the Commissioned Corps. The special ceremony ended with nautical bell ringing and whistle blowing. close
