Professor Ben-Zvi talked about the historical background of the American-Israeli alliance in the late 1950s. He suggested that the Eisenhower administration was unwilling to become militarily engaged in Jordan to protect the pro-Western Jordanian regime from the threat of Egypt. The strategic partnership between the U.S. and Israel became a means of establishing regional security because Israel was the only regional power capable of protecting Jordan. Following his remarks he answered questions from the audience. close
