Ambassador Levitte spoke about relations between the U.S. and France and spoke about current events from a European perspective. He discussed international involvement in Afghanistan, and described the collaborative efforts there as a success that can be attributed to “the unity and determination of the international community.” He contrasted the international unity over Afghanistan to the international divisions over the U.S. invasion of Iraq. He noted that the United Nations unanimously supported the efforts to peacefully disarm Iraq through inspections, but cited a “divorce between the mood in Washington and the mood in New York” at the U.N. headquarters. He also discussed the current situation in Iraq. He asserted that the successful solution of the Iraqi problem is of vital international importance and will set the tone for relations between the West and the Muslim world. He spoke about France’s commitment to assist in Iraq, but also spoke about French determination not to send troops to that country. He also addressed the European Union’s expansion and other developments. Following his remarks, Ambassador Levitte responded to audience questions.
