The panelists discussed and debated the future of U.S. drug policy. The primary issue of contention was whether or not some illegal drugs should be legalized. Mr. Bennett and Rep. Rangel argued against the decriminalization of drugs and touted statistics showing decreased drug use in recent years. Former Mayor Schmoke and former Governor Johnson argued that the war on drugs had been largely ineffective and that the legalization of some drugs should be considered. Mr. Califano moderated the panel. Following opening statements and rebuttals, the panelists responded to questions from the audience. close
