Mr. Hewson, the leader of the opposition Liberal party in Australia, briefed reporters on his visit to Washington, which included meetings with members of the Bush administration cabinet. He said many of his meetings with cabinet members focused around agricultural policies and the continuing GATT talks concerning trade with Europe. He said he was going to Europe following his visit in Washington to meet with European leaders to argue against agricultural protectionism in the European Community. He responded to questions from reporters on several issues, including economic sanctions against South Africa. He said he supported the relaxation of economic sanctions against South Africa following the beginning of the removal of apartheid laws. close
