Vice President Al Gore and Secretary Federico Pena briefed the press on the nation’s air traffic control system. Vice president Gore announced a proposal to set up a government-run corporation to operate the system that managed the movements of the nation’s airline flights. The proposal separated the air traffic control system from the Federal Aviation Administration. The nation’s air traffic control system managed the movements of some 19,000 airline flights each day. The vice president’s proposal created a government-run corporation to operate the system. At the time, government corporations ran the postal service, Amtrack, and the Tennessee Valley Authority. close
