A video was shown of the scientists reacting to the arrival of the photographs. The pictures were taken by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft the previous day as the craft approached Pluto, some three billion miles from Earth, after nine years of traveling. Data from the actual flyby, which had just happened, would not be received until that evening.
