The 21st Century Commission on African-American Males' convention brought together politicians, scholars, and analysts to explore the political and social culture surrounding African-American males in the U.S. and determine methods to improve the lives of disadvantaged African-American men. In the forum entitled, “Effective Public Policy: The Role of Federal, State and Local Government,” panel members examined proposed changes in U.S. institutions designed to counteract the culture of violence and discrimination faced by many young black males in U.S. society. Issues addressed by panel members included education, agencies affecting black males such as the criminal justice system, and national, state, and local policies affecting black males. close
