The Congressional Human Rights Caucus sponsored a rally in front of the U.S. Capitol to observe the second anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre in China, when a student demonstration for democratic reforms was broken up by the military and activists rounded up and tried for crimes against the government. Recently President Bush has spoken in favor of granting most favored nation trade status to China, citing economic advantages to be attained through the increased trade with China. Critics of President Bush’s policy want the extension of most favored nation trade status linked to democratic reforms in the totalitarian country. Speakers at the rally opposing the extension of most favored nation trade status without linkage to reforms included members of the Independent Federation of Chinese Students and Scholars and several members of Congress. close
