Melvin Ely compared the participants, tactics, and lasting changes of the Reconstruction and Civil Rights eras. He spoke about many similarities and differences between the post-Civil War South and what Ely called the “Second Reconstruction” of the 1960s. Professor Ely also discussed the status of affirmative action, the evolution of voter demographics, and political party affiliations. This class was part of a course called, “African American History from Emancipation to the Present.” close
