Republican senators talked about their successes and disappointments during the 2003 legislative session. Among their accomplishments, they highlighted the Medicare prescription drug bill, appropriations for global HIV/AIDS treatment, the jobs and economic growth package, and the $87 billion supplemental appropriation for Iraq and Afghanistan. Among their disappointments, they listed the failure of the Senate to pass tort reform legislation, bio-shield legislation, judicial nominations, the energy bill, and various appropriations bills. Following prepared remarks, the senators responded to questions from reporters. They held a football during the news conference, and consistently utilized football terms and analogies to describe the agenda and procedures of the Senate and the roles and actions of various senators.
