House Republican freshmen talked with reporters about their congressional agenda. Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Georgia) arrived part way through the news conference. They said they wished to present a positive vision to the American people. Holding up two wooden chairs, they said that government, family, religious, civic and business institutions made up the four “legs of the chair” which represents U.S. society. They emphasized that all four types of institutions must be equally balanced to produce stability. They took questions from the press. close
