Cameron McWhirter, staff reporter for the WallStreet Journal, recounted the violence against African Americans that erupted throughout the United States from April to November 1919, deemed “Red Summer.” The author reported that following World War I, black soldiers returned to the United States with expectations of full citizenship only to be met by a backlash, which took hundreds of lives. Mr. McWhirter recounted the riots that broke out from Connecticut to California and the resistance by African Americans, a precursor to the civil rights movement. Cameron McWhirter responded to questions from members of the audience at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta. close
